Trilby vs Fedora?

What’s the difference between these two classic styles?

People are often getting these two iconic styles confused. Yes, to the untrained eye they look similar but the Fedora and Trilby are two very distinctly different styles.

The fedora is probably the most well-known of the styles with the trilby often being referred to mistakenly as a fedora!

So what is the difference between the two? Lets delve into the basics of each style to find out.

The Famous Fedora

Fedoras are traditionally made from wool-felt or fur-felt but now come in a variety of materials. The brim of the fedora is what some would call ‘mid-sized’ and is the main distinction between the fedora and trilby. Traditionally the fedora brim is around 2 inches wide.

In our more modern times the fedora can boast many different crown styles. In the past Fedoras were mainly designed with a centre-crease crown, pinched on both sides.

The Trendy Trilby

Trilby hats are made from many different types of materials, wool, fur-felt, straw weave and even cotton. These trilby hats often share the centre crown crease and pinch on either sides. The trilby’s key crown difference is that the design is much more ‘pointier’ than your typical fedora crown style.

The big difference on the Trilby is the brim size. Trilby’s will often have a short brim size – called a Stingy brim. Trilby’s offer a more artistic and casual look than the Fedora.

There you have it. The main difference between these two hat styles is the brim size!  No matter which style you choose, these styles are iconic and ageless.
